Breckenridge Ski Culture: The Early Days Posted on November 4, 2018 - 9:03 pm by Stacy Sanchez 2 Breckenridge Ski Culture: The Early Days This blog features a super video that shares Breckenridge Ski Culture: The Early Days. A group of soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division spread out around Colorado and helped start many of the ski areas that have blossomed into the mega resorts we enjoy today. Back then, it was a different time and many mountain people had a different way of living life. You can listen to a few of the stories in the following video from the Breckenridge Ski Resort. Above Treeline: Chapter One - The Early DaysWatch this video on YouTube The History Surprisingly, there’s a connection between myself (Stacy, Dina’s husband) and Breck. Rounds and Porter, the company mentioned below is a Wichita, Kansas company. That’s where I grew up. I moved to Colorado in the summer of 1996 and Dina moved here in 1993. To me, it was funny that Wichita had played a role in the beginning of the ski area and town that I would later call home. The following excerpt is from the Breckenridge Tourism Office blog. Late 1950s – The conception of building a ski resort in Breckenridge began when Bill Rounds of the Porter and Rounds Lumber Company became interested in bringing skiing to the valley. He created an organization called the Summit County Development Corporation led by Claude Martin and Bill Starks. 1961 – After some time, Trygve Berge convinces Bill Rounds that a ski area in Breckenridge could be a good business venture. Berge helps design the ski area and layed out the trail system. The Peak 8 Ski Area opened on Dec. 16, 1961, with one Heron double chair and a midway unloading station and one short learners T-bar. Ticket prices were $4 for an adult and $2.50 for children. Attendance ranged in the neighborhood of 17,000 skiers. Opening Day We are now in the middle of a snowy stretch of early November and many skiers are attending ski swaps, and pre-season screenings of ski and snowboard flicks. This is a great time to reconnect with other kindred mountain folk, hoot and holler at the screen, as scenes from our favorite places pop up. We are also exposed to new locations and far off locales that spur the adventurous to travel in search of new experiences and new mountains to explore. We have our favorite lines on our backyard hill, and we’d be happy to show you around when you work with us. We are happy to share that the Breckenridge ski resort is opening on November 9, 2018, this Friday. Locals are treated to a seasonal coffee mug promotion at various coffee shops around town on Thursday, called Wake Up Breckenridge! If you are able to ski more than 3 or 4 days it makes financial sense to purchase a ski pass. We add on 10 days at Vail and Beaver Creek for an additional $50 dollars. If you can go only one day to either of those resorts, it’s worth it. The back bowls of Vail are unreal, and the trees at “The Beav” are amazing. Blue Sky Basin at Vail is a lot of fun too. But, in Breckenridge, we usually start off with at least one, maybe two or three top to bottom runs on Peak 8. That might differ this year, as we are getting an abundance of early season snow. Ski patrol will evaluate the runs and make sure it’s safe to open. As the season progresses, the snow makers will blow snow on the runs adjacent to what’s open and go left and right, expanding the terrain. Ski Resorts Already Open Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are already turning their chairlifts and happy skiers and snowboarders have been riding for a few weeks already. However, the winner this year was Wolf Creek Ski Area. It was the first to be able to open up. The diehards were there and can now be found in the resorts in Summit County. Summer Activities in Breckenridge, Colorado Posted on August 19, 2018 - 9:03 pm by Stacy Sanchez Summer Activities in Breckenridge, Colorado Hiking Mayflower Gulch This post is about Summer Activities in Breckenridge, Colorado. And, this is a website and blog about homes for sale and properties in Summit County. What we do is help families buy and sell, and live their dreams. If you’ve visited once, or a few times, you’ll find something new in the following list. This list comes from a dialogue from a friend who reached out with some questions about where to go and what to do. Her family owns a home locally and wanted to get some fresh ideas on how to explore the Rocky Mountains. I was happy to share what I’ve experienced over the years This post comes a bit late, but that’s because we’ve had a busy summer, so bookmark it for later. We’ve been working with clients, remodeling details, and a nights of interior design homework that now I am happy to share that Dina is now certified through the Interior Design Institute. What that means for our clients is that we can now add value to our relationship regarding the upkeep and interior aspects of the property. More about that later, for now let’s check out the list of things to do! Family-friendly Summer Bucket List Our conversation started out like this: Stacy…hope you are doing well. I am going to be out there for 3 weeks from June 30-July 23rd. I would love to meet up. Also…do you mind sending me a list of some of your favorite things to do…especially if they are some of your insider secrets;). We have done quite a few things…but I am always looking for new ideas of things to do either in Breckenridge or in summit county. What have you done that you really liked or didn’t like? Age / ability recommendations? My kids are aged 13,9 and 6:) I wrote back : “What have you done that you’d recommend for others? I might write a blog with a list of basic stuff as a starting point and we can go from there.” Her response blew me away. Her list is a classic list of things that every family should have as their own Summer Bucket List for Breckenridge. This is how she sent her reply. A numbered list. Perfect for a blog, so I just had to share. Feed the chipmunks at Sapphire Point Bike downhill from Vail pass and stop for lunch in Copper Hike the Fairy Forest and then walk around the lake / play in the teepee / then finish the hike down under the snowflake lift Tuesdays we go to Keystone for the Kid’s Discovery Days. The moms and I usually do an adult activity(go to the spa at the Grand Lodge-I think that is what is called…up near peak 7. We have also gone white water rafting and zip-lining. I have also done I think it is called the McGullough Gulch hike (I think your wife had it on a blog), as well as some hike called maybe Blue River? We have gone to the Breckenridge theater after eating happy hour at Hearthstone. We have crepes from the crepe stand…which is always a must do. Summit County Summer Bucket List When I responded, I made a bullet point list of activities for her to research and look up. Town of Breckenridge – #1 Place to Visit and Ski in Colorado Posted on October 25, 2017 - 7:20 pm by Stacy Sanchez Town of Breckenridge – #1 Place to Visit and Ski in Colorado Recently ranked by U.S. News and World Report, Town of Breckenridge is the #1 Place to Visit and Ski in Colorado! Of course we’re biased as we’re lucky enough to live and work in Breck. But, if you’ve ever been here, then you know how easy it is to see Breckenridge make another top ten list. If you’ve never been, Breck is a real ski town, with a handful of slopes reaching down into the town streets. The free bus ride makes it easy to get around if you don’t want to drive, and our other adjacent towns in Summit County add to a mountain community unlike any other in the Rocky Mountains. Yes, Crested Butte, Steamboat and Telluride are amazing, but they are further away from DIA and the urban amenities of Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs. Contact us with questions about any of these ski towns, and which one might be best for you. If your family is a ski-loving mountain tribe that loves modern extras with a rustic touch, then Breckenridge is up and coming in many regards. Thanks for stopping by our blog, and be sure to sign up for MLS access and a saved search to get notifications with updates about your search! Its down-to-earth and friendly atmosphere has also endured its transformation from a silver- and gold-mining town to one of the country’s most beloved skiing destinations. What’s more, Breck – as it’s called by locals – is a quick drive from other popular Colorado destinations, including Vail, which is 40 miles northwest, and Denver, which is 80 miles northeast. Winter days in Breck are defined by runs on the Tenmile Range and nights spent refueling at downtown restaurants and bars – not to mention a collection of breweries and even a distillery. In the summer, winter sports are replaced with hiking and cycling. But no matter the season, the majesty of a Breckenridge sunset and star-studded night sky is a wonder to behold – and worth coming back to year after year.
