It’s warm and sunny these days up in the high country, and there’s even a drought like condition out there. So, be careful with backyard fires (Breck homes need a permit for fire pits now) and enjoy the summer with a few choice hikes. Lower Cataract Lake Just 16 miles north of Silverthorne is Green Mountain Reservoir and the roads that lead to the trailhead of Cataract lakes. The lower lake is enough for most people, and is a nice loop around a lake. It has a few ups and downs, but most would call it a relatively flat hike. It has some of the largest Columbine fields I’ve ever seen, and not that far into the hike. So, if you’re pressed for time, head to the left and you’ll find those within about 15-20 minutes. This is an off-the-beaten path hike, so look it up on the map,and fair warning, you’ll be out of cell service when you’re up there, but most might consider that a good thing these days! Colorado Wildflower Hike: Lower Cataract LakeWatch this video on YouTube Shrine Ridge near Vail A very popular hike, but for good reason. Parking at Vail Pass is plentiful, but you will also see all those people on the trail too. Everyone takes the same route and are generally friendly, so be patient and step to the side on tighter trail sections. Lots of big open meadows will be crossed on the way up to the higher part of the trail. Once you’ve gained the ridge, you can choose to go left or right and explore. Bring some snacks and cold beverages for a picnic. Pack a rain jacket and keep your eye on the clouds. Descend if you start to feel the wind pick up quickly and hear rumbling in the distance. Most showers pass fast, so hunker down under an umbrella and it’ll soon be over. Head down to Vail for a nice dinner, or stop in Frisco for the closest town in Summit. Either way, you’ll have lots of fun choices. Foote’s has ice cream and an outdoor space if you are craving something cold after a long, hot hike. Shrine RidgeWatch this video on YouTube Mayflower Gulch near Copper Mountain On the way towards Leadville from Copper Mountain is a superb hidden valley called Mayflower Gulch. It’s literally the backside of the mountain range that includes the Breckenridge Ski Resort and some even ski here in the winter. But, in the summer, a nice walk on a road brings you to a set of dilapidated cabins and roads and trails continue if you’re motivated. Most turn around at the cabins, but we recommend bringing some snacks and going higher up and to the right. There you’ll gain the ridge and will be able to look at the magnificent Gore Range in the distance. Afterwards, head up to Leadville for lunch or dinner, or back down to Summit County and choose from one of the many craft breweries like Angry James in Silverthorne, or Outer Range in Frisco. Other classics include Dillon Dam Brewery, the Breckenridge Brewery and Broken Compass. And, this is a website and blog about homes for sale and properties in Summit County. What we do is help families buy and sell, and live their dreams. If you’ve visited once, or a few times, you’ll find something new in the following list. This list comes from a dialogue from a friend who reached out with some questions about where to go and what to do. Her family owns a home locally and wanted to get some fresh ideas on how to explore the Rocky Mountains. I was happy to share what I’ve experienced over the years This post comes a bit late, but that’s because we’ve had a busy summer, so bookmark it for later. We’ve been working with clients, remodeling details, and a nights of interior design homework that now I am happy to share that Dina is now certified through the Interior Design Institute. What that means for our clients is that we can now add value to our relationship regarding the upkeep and interior aspects of the property. More about that later, for now let’s check out the list of things to do! Family-friendly Summer Bucket List Our conversation started out like this: Stacy…hope you are doing well. I am going to be out there for 3 weeks from June 30-July 23rd. I would love to meet up. Also…do you mind sending me a list of some of your favorite things to do…especially if they are some of your insider secrets;). We have done quite a few things…but I am always looking for new ideas of things to do either in Breckenridge or in summit county. What have you done that you really liked or didn’t like? Age / ability recommendations? My kids are aged 13,9 and 6:) I wrote back : “What have you done that you’d recommend for others? I might write a blog with a list of basic stuff as a starting point and we can go from there.” Her response blew me away. Her list is a classic list of things that every family should have as their own Summer Bucket List for Breckenridge. This is how she sent her reply. A numbered list. Perfect for a blog, so I just had to share. Feed the chipmunks at Sapphire Point Bike downhill from Vail pass and stop for lunch in Copper Hike the Fairy Forest and then walk around the lake / play in the teepee / then finish the hike down under the snowflake lift Tuesdays we go to Keystone for the Kid’s Discovery Days. One day in July they have a big event with ponies / bubble tub / face painters. We bring our lunch and have a picnic near the stream Peak 8 fun park Iowa Hill hike Mohawk lake hike Every event at the July 4th downtown in Breckenridge Free Gondola Rides Pizza and Video Games at Erics When my kids were younger if the weather was bad we would go the the Children’s Museum. Rainbow Park [in Frisco] with a picnic. We bring a picnic. On certain days they have this big tarp the kids can go slip and sliding down. Vail, to either the farmers market or the outdoor amphitheater. Last year we saw ET. We send our kids to camp on Wednesdays at the Breck Rec Center as they do the excursions with the kids on Wednesdays. The moms and I usually do an adult activity(go to the spa at the Grand Lodge-I think that is what is called…up near peak 7. We have also gone white water rafting and zip-lining. I have also done I think it is called the McGullough Gulch hike (I think your wife had it on a blog), as well as some hike called maybe Blue River? We have gone to the Breckenridge theater after eating happy hour at Hearthstone. We have crepes from the crepe stand…which is always a must do. It said, “Stacy…thanks so much for the suggestions. We did part of the peaks trail this morning which was fun.” For me, that makes it all worth it.
