Fall Hiking in Summit County

This post is a sampling of options and my opinion on what just may be the Best Trails to See Aspen Trees near Breckenridge. After a summer full of rain, the fall colors in Breckenridge have arrived later than usual. I first moved to the high country in 1995 and have noticed that the fall colors tend to peak around the middle of September each year.

Close Up of Aspen Leaves

The leaves are not guaranteed to peak at that time, and several weather factors and events can play into their longevity and brilliance. For example, one year an early snowstorm fell for a few days and the majority of the leaves turned brown and dropped rather quickly.

This summer the rain fell a lot and the leaves have slowly turned yellow, behind their normal pace. I’m not exactly sure of the science behind why that is, but it is early October now and the colors are still spectacular. And, we have haven’t had any major weather events to hasten or expedite the color change.

Aspen Grove

Regardless, I’m writing this blog, noticing our web traffic has increased on an older blog, Aspen Trees in Breckenridge, Colorado, and thought it was time for an updated blog that shows off some of my newer pics and videos.

A Quick Walk Through the Aspen Trees

Best Trails to See Aspen Trees near Breckenridge

I’ll do a quick summary and work off the original list I posted about. You can expect many trail users along the way as you explore the forest. Please be alert, as mountain bikers or fast runners could be coming down hill and around blind corners at any moment. Take the ten essentials for any outdoor outing in the high country terrain. Ready for the suggestions? Ok, here they are.

Boreas Pass Road and Aspen Alley

These two fall classics are the top two in this line up. And, they will be busy. Start your day at the Breckenridge Troll, Isak Heartstone, near the Stephen C. West Ice Arena and Rotary Snowplow Train Park. Take your pics with the troll and get back in the car and take a drive up the old railroad line that is now Boreas Pass Road. You’ll pass the trailhead parking (another great hiking option, but not so many aspen on that section as Aspen Alley) and after a short drive, you’ll arrive in a spectacular setting of panoramic views of the Ten Mile Range, a fabulous tunnel of aspens, and you can continue to the summit of Boreas for a few moments in the alpine. Aspen Alley is gorgeous and you can watch a video below.

Little Mountain

A new reroute climbs the north face of the hill side and is quite rocky and includes some advanced terrain, meaning high steps in spots that may require the use of hands and feet at the same time. Once you arrive at the top, you will be able to enjoy almost 360 degree views of the surrounding area. To the south is the Blue River valley towards Hoosier Pass, Baldy Mountain to the east, the Breckenridge Ski Resort and Ten Mile Range to the west and to the Williams Fork Valley to the north.

Hoosier Pass

Drive south of Breckenridge and arrive at Hoosier Pass, and you’ll have passed Quandary Peak, a 14er (14,265 foot peak) and will have a few choices to explore fall views from an alpine perspective. For something different, keep going south to explore the towns of Alma and Fairplay. Look for Otto’s food cart in Alma, or continue on to explore the eateries near historic South Park City, like Casa Sanchez.

Lomax Placer

For a quick and easy access walk around historic buildings and trees, the Lomax Placer Mine Site has some old cabins. You can find it right off of Ski Hill Road, just past the skiers bridge that crosses overhead. There is a parking lot for easy access too. Park and take some nice pics with the family!

French Gulch Trails

Drive up Wellington Road from Main St., and take the right when the road forks. Continue past the Country Boy Mine and choose between three trailheads, the B&B, the Reiling Dredge and the Sallie Barber Mine. Numerous loops, out and backs and connections offer multiple options for leaf peepers.

Fall Hikes around Lake Dillon

Seeing the water and trees together is a special treat and one easier hike is the Old Dillon Reservoir, right off of the Dillon Dam Road. Also, look up the Frisco Peninsula trails , Rainbow Lake and the Dillon Nature Preserve for airy views across the lake.

Look Up Aspen Trees

Lily Pad Lake Trail

The parking is on a frontage road near the eastern Frisco I-70 roundabout on/off ramp, and that leads up and through some tall and amazing aspens where you can arrive at a family favorite, Lily Pad Lake.

Montezuma Road

Take the right fork towards the Gondola parking lot at the Keystone Resort and head up Montezuma Road for a scenic drive up to quirky and colorful town of Montezuma. Lots of aspen trees line the drive that some opt to bike instead of drive. Jeeps and OHVs park at the far end of town and continue up to higher alpine roads that criss cross the landscape.

Check out this VIDEO of the Breckenridge Home For Sale at 111 Sawmill Condos! *Edit, I’ve changed my mind and added VIDEOS! That’s right, more than one. You see, it’s hard to show all the fun stuff in just one video. In fact, we have one more that Dina made that will be posted in an another blog. But, this first one shows how quick of a walk it is from the Blue River Plaza in downtown Breckenridge. The Welcome Center, the Riverwalk Center and the Blue River flows through the heart of Breck. Kids hop across rocks in the summertime as families watch from the shoreline.

Walk to Dinner and Shopping in the Historic District

A popular dinner destination, Relish, is above the Breckenridge Kids clothing store and Breckenridge Distillery tasting room. The LIV Sotheby’s office is at the north end of the street at the corner of Ski hill / Lincoln, which goes west and east, respectively (meaning the road changes name in the middle of town). Main street goes north and south and is basically highway 9 that goes north to Frisco and I-70 and south over Hoosier Pass towards Alma and Fairplay.

Ski To Your Home in Breckenridge

I came down from 6 Chair and was standing above the bowl on Peak 8 before connecting trails to end up on Four O’Clock Run. That ski run gives you options for descending towards Peak 9, or towards the Breck Connect Gondola via an underground tunnel and walking across parking lots to the Breckenridge Station. There you can connect to the FREE RIDE, the bus system around Breck. However, there is one section of Four O’clock run that goes down to the Sawmill Condos.

In the morning you walk out the door and head to the “gondy” or grab a bus to Peak 9 to grab some freshies before the higher stuff opens up. The options are there with this Breckenridge home for sale as your basecamp.

Breckenridge Ski Culture: The Early Days

Breckenridge Ski Culture The Early Days

Breckenridge Ski Culture: The Early Days

This blog features a super video that shares Breckenridge Ski Culture: The Early Days. A group of soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division spread out around Colorado and helped start many of the ski areas that have blossomed into the mega resorts we enjoy today. Back then, it was a different time and many mountain people had a different way of living life. You can listen to a few of the stories in the following video from the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Above Treeline: Chapter One - The Early Days

The History

Surprisingly, there’s a connection between myself (Stacy, Dina’s husband) and Breck. Rounds and Porter, the company mentioned below is a Wichita, Kansas company. That’s where I grew up. I moved to Colorado in the summer of 1996 and Dina moved here in 1993. To me, it was funny that Wichita had played a role in the beginning of the ski area and town that I would later call home. The following excerpt is from the Breckenridge Tourism Office blog.

Late 1950s – The conception of building a ski resort in Breckenridge began when Bill Rounds of the Porter and Rounds Lumber Company became interested in bringing skiing to the valley. He created an organization called the Summit County Development Corporation led by Claude Martin and Bill Starks.

1961 – After some time, Trygve Berge convinces Bill Rounds that a ski area in Breckenridge could be a good business venture. Berge helps design the ski area and layed out the trail system. The Peak 8 Ski Area opened on Dec. 16, 1961, with one Heron double chair and a midway unloading station and one short learners T-bar. Ticket prices were $4 for an adult and $2.50 for children. Attendance ranged in the neighborhood of 17,000 skiers.

Opening Day

We are now in the middle of a snowy stretch of early November and many skiers are attending ski swaps, and pre-season screenings of ski and snowboard flicks. This is a great time to reconnect with other kindred mountain folk, hoot and holler at the screen, as scenes from our favorite places pop up. We are also exposed to new locations and far off locales that spur the adventurous to travel in search of new experiences and new mountains to explore.

We have our favorite lines on our backyard hill, and we’d be happy to show you around when you work with us. We are happy to share that the Breckenridge ski resort is opening on November 9, 2018, this Friday. Locals are treated to a seasonal coffee mug promotion at various coffee shops around town on Thursday, called Wake Up Breckenridge!

If you are able to ski more than 3 or 4 days it makes financial sense to purchase a ski pass. We add on 10 days at Vail and Beaver Creek for an additional $50 dollars. If you can go only one day to either of those resorts, it’s worth it. The back bowls of Vail are unreal, and the trees at “The Beav” are amazing. Blue Sky Basin at Vail is a lot of fun too.

But, in Breckenridge, we usually start off with at least one, maybe two or three top to bottom runs on Peak 8. That might differ this year, as we are getting an abundance of early season snow. Ski patrol will evaluate the runs and make sure it’s safe to open. As the season progresses, the snow makers will blow snow on the runs adjacent to what’s open and go left and right, expanding the terrain.

Ski Resorts Already Open

Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are already turning their chairlifts and happy skiers and snowboarders have been riding for a few weeks already. However, the winner this year was Wolf Creek Ski Area. It was the first to be able to open up. The diehards were there and can now be found in the resorts in Summit County. Thanks for reading and contact us with any questions about our awesome ski culture in Summit County.

The video above shows a familiar scene in April, and that’s snow. Wet and heavier  snows fall, but it’s warmer. So it’s melting off faster when the sun comes out. And when the sun comes out, it can feel hot. Well, I think so, at least. And below is a link to an article about why DIA is good to travel to and from. It’s also what helps bring so many families to Breck and Summit.

Families visit the Colorado Rocky Mountains with dreams of powder days, dog sled tours and snowshoeing in a snowy forest. And, then in the summer, they want to hike, bike, and fish. But, now we offer so much more and everyone seems to be pretty healthy out here. Everybody is out doing their own thing, and that’s the beauty of it. There’s enough space and opportunity to find quiet nooks and crannies over the years spent up here. It’s great to have so many choices.

A major plus is having a stellar Search and Rescue Group, Emergency Personnel and Community Resources when it comes to accident response. Ongoing care with specialists might require a visit to the front range or west to the Vail Valley, but it’s only an hour drive or so.

Emotional reasons are easy to bring out, but when it comes down to it, the bills need to get paid. So, click on the article below to read about how Breck is on record pace for STR growth with increasing profits for owners. Ask us about this hot market and how to take advantage of our popular resort area to make the most of your investment.

If you’ve made it down the blog this far, you deserve a reward. Thank you for reading, and to share a favorite of ours, head over to downtown Frisco and go to Bread + Salt and have a late breakfast or brunch. It’s so yummy, and in the summer you can sit outside near Main Street with views of Peak 1 and Mt. Royal.

Breckenridge, Colorado – International Snow Sculpting Competition

Breckenridge, Colorado - International Snow Sculpting Competition

Breckenridge, Colorado – International Snow Sculpting Competition

The Breckenridge, Colorado – International Snow Sculpting Competition is an annual event that draws thousands of locals and visitors to the core of the historic district in downtown Breck. Teams brave the sun, cold and wind of a high alpine environment to work with tons of snow, stomped on by hundreds of volunteers to create a square blank canvas of solid snow. Creativity, hard work and execution come together over a week of carving before the time limit and judging.

I’ve seen some delicate pieces crash before the judging. If you can see the teams working on the sculpture before the deadline, I would highly recommend it. It’s fun to see the different roles that team members take. You can see it’s a collective effort from a group of dedicated people working with a temporary medium, and producing amazing exhibits that brings families together to spend time together. It’s one of my favorite events in Breckenridge, just for its originality and uniqueness.

It was fun to put these together, and I try to put out an album or group of images of both carving in action, and final designs, so please come back to this blog and our social profiles to see more fun images of the snow sculptures in Breck and other mountain life scenery, community info and Summit County, Colorado MLS highlights and featured homes.
