The family-friendly and world-famous Breckenridge Ski Resort is at the heart of this Victorian styled ski town. Rich in mining history, this town has been preserved as one the largest historical districts in Colorado. In fact, the largest chunk of gold ever discovered here, and was called “Tom’s Baby” after the cautious miner carried around his newfound wealth like a baby. In the 1930’s, a group of local women discovered that Breck had been accidentally left off the map and started calling it a “kingdom” since it wasn’t being included. The nickname stuck and we even have a series of events celebrating the local history called Kingdom Days.
Mountain enthusiasts can find adventures year-round, but our prime winter months create a thriving town and atmosphere due to the influx of families who have come to “Breck” for the love of skiing. However, after their first visit, most guests are pleased to discover that Breckenridge is not just about skiing anymore.
Breckenridge, Colorado – Mountain Habitat Community Profile
From Dina: After living here for 24 years I find myself saying that Breckenridge is like a fine wine. It’s getting better with age. I believe that new amenities and investments have created a strong summer visitor base. A few things I love about Breckenridge are that this place attracts good people. It’s really a like minded community. We all came here for the love of the mountains and were seeking a small town lifestyle.
This town also has great food. There are very creative chefs that are fine tuning the dining experience of special places with signature cocktails and rotating seasonal dishes. There are also innovations from local libation locations with the distillery adding a restaurant and a new micro-brewery winning prestigious awards.
Colorado is for sun lovers, as we usually get 300+ days a year of sunshine and the gorgeous blue skies are so deep that you think someone painted the sky. Our winters can be so sunny that you can actually get a better tan than in the summer!
I truly love is going downhill skiing at the Breckenridge Ski Resort on a powder day. The energy in the lift line and on the hill is contagious and so much fun. One thing you’ll quickly learn is to layer your clothes so that you can ski comfortably in cold, wind and blowing snow. If you can do that, you’ll experience some amazing days, as some skiers won’t go out in that, and you’ll have fresh turns and shorter lift lines.
What Life is Like in Breck
A simple and quiet stroll on cross country skis is easily found on the numerous ski trails and backcountry roads in the area. When it’s a beautiful sunny and warm day, when you ski through an untouched field of powder it feels like I’m at the beach.
My favorite winter event is the International Snow Sculpting Competition. It creates an energetic buzz in town that lasts for weeks. This is what life is like in Breck.
The cliche is true. You come for the winters, but stay for the summers. During the warmer months, I love to travel through the wildflowers that blanket the mountains as I walk and hike. Sometimes I even mountain bike or trail run. I even paddle my touring kayak on Lake Dillon.
One of my favorite parts of my mountain habitat is that I can do yoga on the back deck of my house and listen to the sound of the creek running.
Breckenridge, the town of my mountain habitat, has recently expanded its art scene with the ongoing events and installations put forth by the Breck Create and the Creative Arts District. This organization has been elevating the art experience in town by bringing in new and exciting artists that think outside the box and entice public involvement.
